RCP Cymru Wales welcomes Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) report

Responding to the report, Professor Sam Rice, joint vice president for RCP Cymru Wales, said:

‘We welcome this annual report from Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. It provides independent scrutiny and an important assessment of the significant pressures that continue to affect patients and services across the country. Its findings highlight persistent and interconnected challenges, including difficulties accessing care, delays in patient flow, workforce shortages and pressures on urgent and emergency care services. These issues affect patients across the healthcare system and place increasing strain on staff who continue to provide high-quality care in challenging circumstances.

‘The report also reflects concerns that many of these challenges are well understood, but that progress has often been difficult to sustain. As Wales enters a new Senedd term, the health system must take a longer-term approach to improving care through sustainable workforce planning, investment in prevention and closer integration between health and social care. Improving patient flow, reducing delays in accessing care and ensuring the NHS has the workforce it needs to meet rising demand must be central priorities for the years ahead. Patients deserve timely access to high-quality care, and staff deserve the time, resources and support they need to deliver it.

‘We look forward to working with the Welsh government, NHS Wales and partners across the system to help deliver the sustained action needed to improve patient care and build a more resilient health service for the future.’
